Walt Disney World
A History in Postcards
Chapter 4 Early Postcard Booklets

Side Bar Article: The booklet Variants Spreadsheet

A bit of explanation is in order as to just what this table is and how to read it this table developed from a spreadsheet written by a collector named Tom De Luca, he then sent it to me, and we then got input from Becky Gray. after the inital listing on the site Ted Michaud let us know about some more booklets that the three of us didn't have. There are two broad groupings of booklets; the ones printed from 1975 through 1979 had the name of the land, resort, or the attraction that was featured in the booklet, written in a font chosen to be representative of that location. These were the booklets with the numbers 0111-0069 through 0111-0079. But each of those numbers came in different versions, the first two years they were printed with the same “outline” castle icon found “DP” (Dexter Press) used on the cards they printed. The icon I am talking about here would be on the back of the card in the center at the bottom of the dividing line, and Dexter actually had various icons for the different lands but I'm guessing the order for the print job specified "castle icon" so they used the castle icon that they had.  The first year they were printed in Black ink, the second printing of these booklets had blue ink, but still with the “outline icon”.

After that they went to the “solid Castle” icon used on all other postcards printed in that era. For many of the years these booklets were printed staples were visibly used to bind them together, later they went to something more like a regular book binding. The last change was to add the ® registered trademark symbol next to the Walt Disney World logo on the back of the card, and at that same time the whole second series of cards, with different fronts as well. Some of the booklets of the first series may have been printed in as many as five different printings all with the same cards fronts, just having these small variations on the card backs. Frontierland is the only booklet known so far to exist in all five versions. Many of them may not exist in all the versions just from the fact that if a printing was done each year (as seems likely) that some years they may have had a stock of booklets left over from the previous year.  The Tomorrowland booklet seems not to have existed at all.
